Building duration on a nose freeze is actually pretty easy if you use a Reverse Lure. A Reverse Lure provides incentive for the dog to maintain duration and is my opinion the most powerful tool that you can use to create a duration behavior.
The Reverse Lure operates on the concept of having a reward in play while the dog maintains stillness. The reward comes out of play when the dog ceases the behavior. I demonstrate how I use Reverse Luring in the video below.
The more difficult part of the Reverse Lure is practicing the mechanics… it may feel awkward in the beginning but once you get the mechanics down it’s actually quite easy! It just takes a little practice.
One thing to consider is that when you mark the dog, you are actually marking for STILLNESS. STILLNESS with the nose in the hole is the criteria for this exercise.
Once you build STILLNESS, you want to vary DURATION otherwise the dog might start self releasing based on their inner clock. For instance, if you always click at 2 seconds, your dog will believe that this is a 2 second behavior and will start to self release. We all know how accurate dog’s inner clocks are…. think about how they behave when dinner time rolls around!
This is supplemental material that can help you create that Nose Freeze on Containers…. if you are interested in learning more, take a look at my Workshop starting on November 30 “Fixing that Box Smasher with a Focused Alert”. If you would like to see the impact of this training, take a look at the BEFORE and AFTER video that shows just how powerful this training was with Powder!
What are you using for the dog to put his nose in? I need something like that as my pup is always moving the scent tin with her nose so it is hard to get stillness.
Is there scent in the switchbox?
Thanks!
Yes š
